Tax on Tax

I just filed my tax returns. I paid the good on-line preparer the fees due. I noticed an extra $1.65 in sales tax…

I understand it, but can’t help noticing the irony that I am paying taxes on paying my taxes.

(fortunately the fees are deductible next year).

Sick Pic

I was going through some old photos and came across this one that I took from the top of the IDS Tower (on the roof, doing some stuff with our transmitter).

The photo isn’t much to look at, but it is one of those shots that brings back that really freaky “Dude-I’m-Gonna-Fall” feeling.

Just looking at it on my computer screen, I had that same shudder I experienced as I leaned over to take it.

Senses are funny that way. A good (or bad) sound/smell/sight can bring back emotions from your history.

The content creator needs to remember that. Some sensations are fairly ubiquitous (the first bird song of spring, apple pie baking etc).  But I need to remember that the warm-fuzzy feeling that song gives me doesn’t necessarily have the same emotional pull on the consumer. The picture I posted here is just a marginal shot that has a different perspective on the world. I can’t expect that the consumer of this content is going to have the same, body shuddering spine tingle I get whenever I look at it.

That said however,

Here are a few other fun photos I took while up there:

David and the Mech

I should probably have an opinion on this.

But I just can’t put it together.

Mecha Manga Bible Heroes
smallposter.jpg
This one is “David and Goliath”

Here is the copy from their website:

In Spring, 2008 from JMG Comics. The 32-page, full color Mecha-Manga Bible Heroes series is filled with action-packed mecha-manga art and adventure-filled tales from the Old Testament – all for just $2.99! The characters, stories and themes remain the same. Only the setting has changed – to a futuristic world of robots, aliens and advanced technology! Be sure to reserve your copy today.

So… um… David reached into the lava flow an picked up 5 smooth hyper-laser-blaster-beams…

…Goliath sneered “Am I like a Quartog that you come after me with a Proton-parcep?”

Pictures of the Day – Sunday and Monday

Here are my photos of the day from my high-quality 1.5 Megapixel PDA Camera Phone!

Sunday

I spend Sunday nights hanging out with our Youth Group.

Notice how attentive we all are as Dennis, the Youth Pastor speaks.

Monday

Monday nights, I get together with some friends. We usually hit up Champps, but this week we chose another establishment for wings.

Not a bad setting, but the wings were pretty lousy.

You can see, by the picture, that we spend quality time together by… um… texting our wives.

Ruined Songs…

I buddy of mine posted a YouTube video on his blog…

I followed it and clicked around to a few other videos.

I came across this one:

Not outrageously funny, but it did manage to ruin a few songs for me .

Raising Kids Well… I think

Things 1 & 2 were sitting at different computers, on different floors of our house. I walked by Thing 1 and asked her what she was up to “Just playing checkers”.

I went up the stairs and checked on Thing 2… Same thing.

They were playing checkers against each other, online… in the same house.

I appreciated that relationship dynamic, as my brothers and I play games online frequently. But I had to point out that they were in the same house…

After dinner they played checkers again… this time with a real board and the dining room table.

Another totally unrelated story…

Earlier in the day, I had placed groceries in the back entryway. I stepped away from that project for a moment, then came back to find that “Thing 3” (our 2 year old) had taken all the boxed items to the kitchen and had organized them in (mostly) order by size.

Here is a Photo.

And with that photo, I one again endeavor to take on the “Photo of the Day” project.

I will try to shoot and post 1 photo from the day.

Most likely with my phone (as above), but I will try to fit one or two shots with a decent camera as well.

Company Changes

I bet the title got all my co-workers looking at their RSS readers!

Sorry… nothing juicy here.

I came across a great blog post about Corporate Branding changes (primarily tech companies).

What REALLY amazed me isn’t so much the evolution of the logos, but the evolution of the companies themselves.:

The age of some of the companies was surpising:

IBM, Nortel and Nokia go back to the 19th century

Hard Cold Cash…

I am torn.

The weather is in the double digit sub-zero range this weekend.

I have had a wonderful time staying indoors with my gals. We did a jigsaw puzzle, started reading a new book, baked cookies, and spent a lot of time in the kitchen.

I am not sure why, but for some reason, I like to spend a lot of time in the kitchen when it is cold out.

Throughout the course of the weekend, we made cookies (thanks to our neighbor’s gift of cookie dough), apple crisp, Pork Stir Fry, and broiled salmon (thanks to my future brother-in-law’s angeling skills).

The time with the family has been wonderful. We have all stayed cozy and warm.

My conflict is this

Everytime the furnace kicks in, I get this picture of cash flying out of my house. I hate hearing that thing kick in. It ruins my cozy attitude.

I am grateful for the warm place to live. I am just dreading next month’s gas bill.

I would love to turn the heat down, but I have … well… a wife.

OK… OK…

As I type it, I realize how aweful that sounds. God has given us a warm house and the ability to pay for it. 3-4 days of bitter cold won’t break the bank. I should just enjoy the 3 day weekend I have with 4 of the most beautiful girls in the world.

So, I will go back to enjoying this moment, sitting in the family room, under blankets, watching the AFC game with my 5 year old.

I will take this moment to blog about the real things that matter. Like that movie 10,000 BC I just saw advertised. That looks like it will be terrible.
