Foursquare search gets specific

Interface design continues to get more natural.

I’m looking for that taco place Greg and I went to last year.

Foursquare just pushed out an update to their iOS and Android app that allows the user to get specific in a way that only Foursquare can provide.

I’m looking for a place I haven’t been to before, that serves sushi, that is open and has someone I know dining there.

Teens are sharing more, but privately

1403785_10090459In a 2012 follow up to a 2006 survey, The Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project found that:

  • 91% of teens posted a photo of themselves online (up from 76%)
  • 53% posted their email address on social media (up from 29%)
  • 20% posted their phone number (up from 2%)

But that doesn’t mean the information is widely available.

  • 60% of teen Facebook users had set their profiles to “private”, and 89% of them indicated that adjusting their profile privacy setting was (at worst) “not too difficult”.

Smartphones overtake those other phones

Today Apple will announce the new iPhone. 

Yesterday, Google announced over 500 Million Android devices had been activated.

As all this happens, the Pew Internet and American Life Project has come out with new numbers on Smartphone usage.

  • 45% of American Adults own Smartphones
  • 55% of mobile subscribers own Smartphones (For the first time… more of us are using smart phones than feature phones)
  • Nearly 70% of those who make over $75,000 own Smartphones

In a similar report, Nielsen indcates that 74% of young adults (25-34) now own smartphones.

A Good Business Lesson from Facebook’s iOS change

I saw this today:

Facebook for iOS goes native, waves goodbye to HTML 5 | The Verge.

Facebook rolled out a new app that is now fully native (as opposed to a browser displaying HTML5).

This move provides a great example on how to make a key business decision.

Facebook released 2 fully native apps in the past year or so (Camera+ and Facebook Messenger). They did so, in large part, to gauge the reception of a fully native app.

It’s a great example of how one can take small steps towards making a larger business decision, that can ultimately inform that larger decision.
